"String's Arrival"

This past weekend my good friend String got here. It was great to see a familiar face. But first, a little back story on his arrival. He’s my good friend from college, who I met when I was a tour guide at UF. He’s currently in law school at Cumberland in Birmingham.

At UF, we always joked that we were the only thing that kept up the “house of cards” that was our friends. In that, we meant that people would come up with good ideas on things to do, and people would immediately agree to go do whatever the good idea was. However, as the time came closer, one by one people would renege and the whole idea would fall like “a house of cards.”

When I told him that I was getting a transfer to Sydney, he was extremely excited for me and a bit jealous. As an outdoorsy guy and certified world traveler, Australia was close to the top of places he wanted to visit. In our conversation, I told him, “You know, you should really come for a while and stay with me for a bit.”

His response, “that’d be awesome. I think I’m going to do it. Right now I only have an internship for half the summer.”

I had had numerous other conversations similar to that one before the discussion with String and kind of forgot about that conversation as I had plenty of other things on my mind while preparing for the trip. A few days after that initial conversation, I emailed him a picture of my place. His response, “I hate/love you.”

Two days later, I get an email from him, with nothing but a flight itinerary. He had booked a flight for ~5 weeks in Australia. Remember – he’s no house of cards.

Fast forward to now. I was really excited for his arrival. Since he got here (4 days ago), we’ve had a great time. I’ve been lucky in that I didn’t have to work 2 of the first 3 days he was here as I’ve been “on the beach” both literally and figuratively (not assigned to a project at Bain).

We’ve walked Bondi to Coogee, went out to the wee hours of the night, rode the ferries, and got in our fair share of surfing. And the next month bodes well as we already have trips planned to Byron Bay and Melbourne. Stay tuned for the details – guaranteed to have long stories of shenanigans and tom-foolery.
