Volleyball

One of the things I wanted to do while I was over here was start doing something that is somewhat if not altogether unique to Australia. Before embarking, Clark came up with the idea of mastering the boomerang and becoming “the boomerang guy.” Unfortunately, or actually maybe fortunately, I have yet to see a boomerang since getting to Sydney. Perhaps I will when I venture into the Outback.(Note: “Boomerang guy” is the equivalent of “that guy” status, but in a somewhat normal social setting. For example, at UVA there is “barefoot guy”, who walks around barefoot, and “boom-box guy”, who is always carrying a boom-box. “Boomerang guy” would go to Piedmont or another park and simply throw a boomerang back and forth to himself)

In my first weekend here, I think I found it. Jay, who I know from Atlanta, asked me to go play beach volleyball. I had played when I was younger, but never anything that was that competitive. As one could imagine here in Sydney, there are plenty of games at some of the beaches near me. Getting into a game is as easy as any pick-up basketball game.

I held my own in the first few matches that I played, but am hoping to get better over the next few months. Thankfully my height makes me an asset on the court.

Another fringe benefit of this hobby, the girls are incredible – tall, blonde, and tan. It’s too bad they can kick my ass in volleyball.
