“Driving on the other side of the road”

Last night on the way home from my basketball game, my teammate asked if I wanted to drive home. How could I pass up that chance (especially when the roads were virtually empty)? Driving on the other side of the road is a very strange feeling. I had a tendency to stay away from the center line because I still thought that I was sitting in the American driver’s seat. As a result, I was definitely hugging the curb, and without the assistance of a passenger probably would have driven right into it. The other thing that screwed me up was the blinker and the windshield wipers were in the opposite spots. Literally every time I tried to put on the blinker I turned on the wipers. My Aussie friend thought this was hysterical and wanted me to drive further just so he could make fun of me. After five minutes and when I thought I had the hang of it, I stopped actively thinking about what I was doing and tried to engage in conversation. That was a HUGE mistake. I ended up turning into the wrong lane. Thankfully there weren’t many cars on the road. I hope that’s my last Australian driving experience. Unless I have to drive, I’m going to avoid it. It’s too much to think about for me. And god help me if I had to do it in traffic.
