I will be in Australia on a short-term transfer from late May through the end of September. As part of Bain’s AC program, ACs have a chance to transfer to any of the global offices in Bain’s systems in their 3rd year. This transfer process is based on availability and partly comes down to the “luck of the draw.”
The first of the transfer rounds for me came up in January. I submitted my name for a position in Australia, and was not picked at that time. I was somewhat disappointed, but hopeful that another opportunity would come up. Unbeknownst to me, it would come even sooner than I expected.
As my last project was coming to a close, I met with the staffing manager in the Atlanta office. We were discussing potential options for my next project in the states, and she mentioned that Sydney had a few openings and needed people with financial services background.
Given my experience in insurance and my finance degree, my background seemed to fit the mold. I decided to submit my name again. Three days later (4/29/08), I received an email from the transfer HR office saying, “We’d like to move ahead with Jeremy. Thanks.”
I was (and still am) ecstatic that I was chosen. Since then, I learned a little bit more about the project and have secured an apartment for my time there. I’ll be living in Bondi Beach, ~2 blocks from one of the most famous beaches in the world. I couldn’t be more excited for this upcoming adventure. I hope y’all will come along for the ride, either by literally visiting Sydney or checking this site for updates and new pictures.
